Key Points:
Light levels were averaging 20 foot-candles. After lighting was installed, averaged 80 fc.
Eliminated two maintenance cycles by using T5 lamps with program start ballasts

Challenge:

Energy Performance Lighting (EPL) was contracted to reduce energy consumption by the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs. During the audit, the hangers were found to be seriously deficient on light levels. The existing light levels were averaging 20 fc. Technicians were using flashlights on much of their work. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Recommended practice for aircraft maintenance facilities is 75 fc. We also had to be extremely careful due to the cost of the aircraft.

Solution:

EPL installed a 6-lamp fixture with T5 lamps. We reduced their energy consumption by 57% and increased their light levels to 80 fc. The technicians were ecstatic. We installed anti sway bars from the ceiling, so the lights would not sway when the large doors were open. Every lighting technician was extremely careful with all their tools, screws, and lamps.
