Challenge:

The warehouse was lit with two (2)-400w metal halide lights at each mounting point and eight-foot T12 lamps. Some worked, some did not. The wiring was tangled and hard to follow from years of add-ons. Critical work areas varied from under-lit to dark. Skylights on the walls were not being used because of types of lights and wiring design. Generally, the lighting was old, out of date, and a mess. On top of this, they were having a problem with the electrical panel overheating. A third-party electrician recommended installing another panel.

Solution:

EPL redesigned the lighting in the warehouse by removing the existing metal halide lights and replacing them with high efficiency fluorescents. Near the overhead doors and skylights, EPL installed photocells which automatically turn the lights off if there is sufficient daylight. Occupancy sensors were installed throughout the warehouse space. In the showroom light levels were adjusted to 65 foot candles based on IES/ANSI’s recommendations. Due to the large drop in energy consumption, the electrical panel had cooled down enough that a new panel was no longer recommended. This project saved the client over 102,000 kWh per year. We also got the client over $5,000 in grants!
