Energy Performance Specialists L.L.C. was founded in January of 2003. It was founded by Andres Trevino and Rodney Heller. The first year was slow, breaking even only because we paid ourselves about $1/hour, working 50 to 60 hour weeks.
The primary target was retrofitting lighting for school gyms. This was a simple application and market. As we built our knowledge, our markets expanded to include warehouses, factories, offices, hospitals and clinics. The first factory we did was overwhelming to us. Now with the knowledge and expertise we’ve gained we look for projects that challenge us.
The first 3 years were marked with slow but steady growth. Toward the end of the 3rd year, I purchased Trevino’s interest. The 4th year, 2006, marked the company’s first employees. More importantly, this was the beginning of formal education in energy efficient lighting for the company. Heller got Lighting Certified and became a member of the National Council for Qualified Lighting Professions and a member of the Illuminating Engineer Society.
We continued our quest for knowledge and made it a center piece of our company. The opportunity to help companies reduce their energy consumption and improve their productivity has never been greater. The knowledge of light and its effects on humans is growing every day. Add to this the speed of which lighting technology is advancing and you have a market that is in dire need of professionals who possess the knowledge of lighting and energy.
As our dedication to the knowledge of lighting grew, our sales grew. As our sales grew, our client base and company grew. In 2009 sales went from $1 million to $2.4 million and employment jumped from 10 employees to 21 employees.
As we move into 2010, we continue to grow. We expect sales of energy efficient lighting to continue to grow. We have also decided to expand our horizon in the energy conservation world by expanding into building envelope systems and water conservation systems. Both with excellent growth potential as energy costs continue to rise.
